Dave & Mariel

Dave started his journey into West Coast Swing in November 2004. Several months later, he entered his first competition and hasn’t stopped since! Dave quickly moved his way up the ranks at competitions across the United States and overseas, and currently competes at the All-Star level.

While he enjoys showing off his skills on the competition floor, Dave’s true love is social dancing. Followers of all levels fill his dance card for as long as he is out on the floor!

As a teacher and as a social dancer, Dave is known for his clear and calm way of explaining even the most complex topics. Dancers constantly asked for advice on the social dance floor, so it was only natural he would start teaching!

In addition to dancing and teaching, Dave is quickly becoming one of the most sought after West Coast Swing deejays on the circuit. You can find him “spinning” the tunes at local West Coast Swing monthly dances and weekend dance events in and around the northeast. He is known for playing a wide variety of genres and tempos so the dance floor stays full, and prides himself on playing songs that bring out the best in all levels of competitors.

Mariel came to the wonderful world of West Coast Swing from Ballroom, where she competed in International Standard & Latin.

In 2010, she began teaching West Coast Swing, and was immediately responsible for a variety of weekly group lessons and drills classes in addition to teaching privates, DJing social dances, and providing fun and innovative marketing for the program. She also co-ran Boston Dance Challenge (a local World Swing Dance Council event) in 2011 and 2012.

In her relatively short competitive WCS career, Mariel has flown through the divisions, and went from winning Newcomer to competing in the Advanced Division in under two years.

While she loves competing, teaching is her true passion. Mariel has taught dancers of all ages and levels, in classes from 1 to over 100 dancers. She is known for her positive energy and her ability to provide clear feedback along with supportive encouragement to students of all levels, making learning easy and fun. And most importantly, she knows how to reach all types of students – no two students are exactly the same, and no two lessons should be the same either.

Outside of dancing, Mariel is a full time Master’s student at Harvard University, where she is studying educational neuroscience in their Mind, Brain & Education program.
